The festival celebrated the coronation of Emperor Nicholas II. No earlier songs were performed and the programme included works by the first professional composers. Five female choirs took part for the first time, but they were only allowed to participate in the singing competition. All song festivals after this one have been held in Tallinn.

2690 mixed and 1881 male choirs and 840 musicians had registered for the festival. There were approximately 30,000 listeners on both days of the festival.
