The song festival celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia was held under the patronage of President Konstantin Päts. A competition for finding new repertoire was organised before the song festival, which resulted in the creation of many choir songs that have remained popular through time. Gustav Ernesaks took to the conductor�s stand for the first time and conducted the female choir singing Young Spring and male choir singing Men, Let Us Go.

569 collectives with 17,501 singers-musicians took part in the festival. Guests included choirs from Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Poland.
