This was the first song festival held after Estonia regained its independence. The festival took place both in Tartu and Tallinn. It celebrated the passing of 125 years from the first nationwide song festival.

817 choirs and orchestras with 25,802 singers-musicians took part in the festival. There were many visiting Estonian singers and musicians from abroad, guests from Finland and other countries. There were 32 visiting choirs and orchestras from 11 countries.
